What if the unexpected happens and you are no longer able to care for your pet? It's important to have a Pet Plan.
Let us help. It's free and it's easy.
Each year, thousands of animals arrive in shelters (and are often euthanized) because their owners did not make detailed, specific pet care plans. What will happen to your pets in the event of your death? What if you have a sudden catastrophic diagnosis? What if you are not able to take care of your pets because you have to move into a care home?
It’s not enough to assume, or hope, that friends or family will take care of your animal if you are not able to do so. Have A Pet Plan is a free website that offers a way to make future arrangements for your pets.
Our beloved pets count on us. We want them to have a happy future, even if they can’t be with us. We want to give you the peace of mind that Have a Pet Plan offers—ensuring their future care, if you are unable to do so.
Have the important discussion. Who will take care of my pets if I can’t? You’ll need a Pet Guardian. But before you make your choice, consider these questions. Will this person be willing to care for my pets for the rest of their lifetimes? Does my guardian have the time, space, resources, and ability to take on my pets? Have a chat with your proposed guardian to make sure they understand your plans and are willing to serve as Pet Guardian. If you have a lawyer or financial advisor, discuss with them how to set up financial provisions for your pet’s care in your absence.
Once you’ve chosen a Pet Guardian, download and fill out the Have a Pet Plan Guardian Agreement and ask the guardian of your pet(s) to sign.
Make sure the document is kept in multiple places:
Ensure your Pet Guardian’s information is listed, with full contact details, with your veterinarian, attorney, emergency contacts, and anyone else involved in your day-to-day life.
Consider talking to your lawyer about including your Pet Guardian in your will, with a stipend for future care of your pet. Discuss the feasibility of including your Pet Guardian as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy, for the future care of your pet. Talk to your life insurance providers or lawyers for specific guidance based on your individual circumstances and location.
Spread the word that you Have a Pet Plan and tell others! Tag a picture of your pet along with their Pet Guardian!

We hope to make Have a Pet Plan an international movement. You can get involved by asking your friends and family if they’ve designated a pet guardian. Tell your vet and animal service providers (dog walkers, house sitters) about the program, share links to this website, and just help spread the word! Let’s make sure that every pet everywhere has a safe plan for their future wellbeing!
