What happens if you don’t know someone that can serve as a Pet Guardian?
This is why advance planning is so very important!
First, reach out to your extended network of friends and family, and ask them to help ask their networks to find out if anyone is willing to serve in this capacity. Meet this person. Have this person meet your pet and discuss with them what would be involved.
Contact reputable local rescues. Is your pet breed specific? Look for rescues that specialize in that breed for help in assigning a future guardian. Consider asking a reputable local rescue to serve as guardian, if you absolutely have no other options. And if you do this, please make sure – after talking to your lawyer or insurance agent or estate planner – that you leave funding to that rescue for your pet in the future and give them your support and attention in the meantime. Volunteer. Make small donations. You don’t have to be rich to do this – you just need to be involved!
